  7.      This .ZIP file contains five of the eight songs of the song
  8. cycle, "The Road Goes Ever On," written by the late Donald Swann, 
  9. setting the poetry of J.R.R. Tolkien to music.  The five songs are:

  11.           The Road Goes Ever On
  12.           Upon the Hearth the Fire is Red
  13.           In the Willow-Meads of Tasarinan
  14.           In Western Lands
  15.           I Sit Beside the Fire
  16.  
  17.      The remaining three songs, "Namarie," "Errantry," and 
  18. "Bilbo's Last Song" were deliberately omitted.  The first because
  19. it was scored for chorus and I could not do it justice as a MIDI
  20. file; the second because it was 22 pages long--too long to do
  21. without a MIDI keyboard; the third because it contained a lot of
  22. trills and sounded terrible.  If you want to hear this last one, it
  23. is featured on the CD "Amiscellany" with (faded) tenor John Amis
  24. and Donald Swann at the keyboard.  I apologize if these omissions
  25. have disappointed you.

  27.      There are three files for each song.  The first .MID file is
  28. the complete song from Swann's piano-vocal score.  The second .MID
  29. file is appended with a "-V" in the title.  This is the melody
  30. only, including rests and interludes between stanzas.  This is so
  31. you can learn how the song goes.  The third file is an ASCII text
  32. file containing the lyrics so you can sing along.

  34.      A word about the text files--the lines and stanzas were
  35. grouped by me, based on the printed lyrics in the score.  My
  36. objective was to group them to match the cadence of the music and
  37. facilitate singing.  I have not, I assure you, appointed myself
  38. Tolkien's editor.  The lyrics are 100% Tolkien.  These files are
  39. offered to you as a convenience and courtesy, to save you the time
  40. and trouble of having to look the poems up for yourself.

  42.      The MIDI files are Type 1 standard MIDI files done with
  43. MusicTime for Windows and a SoundBlaster card.  Any computer with
  44. a SoundBlaster or compatible card can play them.  The tracks are
  45. named with my instrument selections, so that those of you with MIDI
  46. keyboards can match the tracks for your synthesizer should they not
  47. sound right.
