- THE ROAD GOES EVER ON
- A Song Cycle
- Music by Donald Swann
- Lyrics by J.R.R. Tolkien
- Arranged for MIDI by Garry Mason ("Wampyir")
-
- This .ZIP file contains five of the eight songs of the song
- cycle, "The Road Goes Ever On," written by the late Donald Swann,
- setting the poetry of J.R.R. Tolkien to music. The five songs are:
-
- The Road Goes Ever On
- Upon the Hearth the Fire is Red
- In the Willow-Meads of Tasarinan
- In Western Lands
- I Sit Beside the Fire
-
- The remaining three songs, "Namarie," "Errantry," and
- "Bilbo's Last Song" were deliberately omitted. The first because
- it was scored for chorus and I could not do it justice as a MIDI
- file; the second because it was 22 pages long--too long to do
- without a MIDI keyboard; the third because it contained a lot of
- trills and sounded terrible. If you want to hear this last one, it
- is featured on the CD "Amiscellany" with (faded) tenor John Amis
- and Donald Swann at the keyboard. I apologize if these omissions
- have disappointed you.
-
- There are three files for each song. The first .MID file is
- the complete song from Swann's piano-vocal score. The second .MID
- file is appended with a "-V" in the title. This is the melody
- only, including rests and interludes between stanzas. This is so
- you can learn how the song goes. The third file is an ASCII text
- file containing the lyrics so you can sing along.
-
- A word about the text files--the lines and stanzas were
- grouped by me, based on the printed lyrics in the score. My
- objective was to group them to match the cadence of the music and
- facilitate singing. I have not, I assure you, appointed myself
- Tolkien's editor. The lyrics are 100% Tolkien. These files are
- offered to you as a convenience and courtesy, to save you the time
- and trouble of having to look the poems up for yourself.
-
- The MIDI files are Type 1 standard MIDI files done with
- MusicTime for Windows and a SoundBlaster card. Any computer with
- a SoundBlaster or compatible card can play them. The tracks are
- named with my instrument selections, so that those of you with MIDI
- keyboards can match the tracks for your synthesizer should they not
- sound right.
-
- I hope you enjoy these files and will let me know what you
- think of them.
